Week 12 integrative studio II

24 march 2020

After a lot of discussion I came up with the element called ‘lettering’ in the last class. Today I choose to dig deeper in lettering and choose my favourite aspect and work over it.

So my favorite design concepts include mandala, zentangle, doodle, mehandi, scribbling, scratching, hatching and open curved calligraphy or random lines. Using all these concept I thought of using the concept of permutation and combination that I had used in 12th grade mathematics. I tried to combine some of these design concepts and do some kind of ‘experiment’ with lettering as an element.

I have tried some of these letters like what, to, do, next and then combine all of these to make the 5th ‘iteration’.

What.

In this I have combined the concept of transformation of lines, symbols, scribbling, hatching and open ended curved lines.

To write ‘to’ I have used the shortcut number ‘2’ and I have used the concept of doodle and zentangle.

To write ‘DO’ I have used the concept of doodle and line transformation which also includes mehandi design highlighted in both the letters.

In the word ‘Next’ I have tried to combine doodle, polka dots, mosaic art, scribbling, round shading, mehandi, and continuity gestalt principle.

Then I have combined all of these in the 5th iteration/experiment and then formed the sentence ‘What to do next

I have chosen this word intentionally as this pops up in my mind constantly. The moment I sit idle, i wonder what to do next. My mom says that i never sat quite after my school hours too. I used to continue with my calligraphy lessons or fill up the pages of my drawing book.

Lettering has made me realise how all kind of art forms can be combined and can be United under the umbrella of the term ‘Lettering‘. This was actually a gun exercise and helped me utilize my art skills to combine all these and digitalize lettering for the first time.

I have also tried doing this but this didn’t come out to be that well.

Interlaced

I am waiting for the reviews that ma’am would give after seeing my first attempt at digital lettering. Hoping for positive reviews. I would also like to take peer review as it is the most important part of design thinking. Youngsters have the most updated knowledge about good design and bad design according to me.

So peer review is equally important.

Stay tuned and let me know how you liked it!.
