So we had been given the challenge to make a sustainable yet usable object using only 2 sustainable materials.
So we thought of using gum herb/pop and jute as our sustainable materials. And then make a coaster out of it. This seems quite easy, but as we started making it we realised that it wasn’t as easy as it was expected to be.

We sourced all the raw materials by ourselves. We went to some local shops to source jute and gum herb.

We also went to two coconut water stalls to source natural gum herb. The person was also kind enough to help us get these tiny pieces of gum herb from each unit of coconut.

Then after sourcing, we came back home and like the layers of whip cream In between the cake sponge, we arranged differnt layers of jute and then we had put the layers of gum herb in between. Then at the top we also had a jute wire/rope which we made a spiral and put it on the top of it. And then we let it soak heat in the nature for 5 days. We are yet waiting it to harden up a little bit so that it can be usable and sturdy enough.

We had actually taken lot of efforts in sourcing gum herb by roaming all around the streets and grabbing every single coconut that had even a tint of gum herb. It was actually fun doing this as well as dangerous enough as we had the risk of getting corona in mind like 24/7!
The most interesting part was making the layers of this coaster. Personally I love baking, so I felt like I am actually arranging layers for making a cake. I am eagerly waiting for it to dry so that we can test its usability.
We have also thought of an alternative of using pop if in case it doesn’t harden up. But let’s hope for the best.
Stay tuned.
