Week 3 objects as history

Mesopotamia is between Persian gulf and Mediterranean sea. It is the cradle of civilization. It was amongst the fertile area of early agriculture.

Sumer-the land of civilized kings.

Sumer was an ancient civilization whivh was founded in the Mesopotamia region of the Fertile Crescent. It is situated between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

Three important inventions of Sumer.1)Wheel was perfected here.

☆Benefits-○Pottery○Commute○Agriculture○Transport and ox carts.○mass production

2)communication

3) trade contact with other civilization shared symbiotic relationships with Akkad- cultures and language were borrowed between these civilization.

Other cities of Sumerians include:

Kish

Nippur

Eridu

Uruk

Lagash

Urumma

Eridu- first city or city-state established in sumer.

Cities were occupied by farmers, hunters Fisher folk.

Pottery transitioned from fine hand painted slow wheel pottery to fast wheel mass produced pottery.

Script shifted from pictorial to cuneiform script- wedge shaped script.

☆Ziggurat or UR

Religion-Temple at top of ziggurat were crops were offered.

☆All cities named after gods and goddesses. But the religion was polytheist.(Multiple culture in same city with different religions)

Deities include An(heaven) , Ki(goddess of earth) , Innana(godess of love, beauty, war, prostitution) , Utu (sun), Sin(moon) , Enki( water, knowledge, creation) , Enlil (god of air).

☆Represents Brahmas and zoroastrians.

☆Epic or gilgamesh.

1)First recorded fictional narrative.

2)Hero’s journey- first time where concept of hero is introduced.

Divine theory of kingship.

Divine theor of king ship, is the reason why king is shown larger than any other creature.Lapis lazuli is the gemstone used in background.Lapis lazuli, is a deep-blue metamorphic rock and is used as a semi-precious stone that is prized since antiquity for its intense bright color.

Sargon of Akkad

☆Under sargon of Akkad, Sumer was assimilated into Akkadian empire.

Akkadians controlled Sumer but the Sumerian language remained in use under them.- why?

First recorded poet of the world- Enheduanna- found from this period.Code of HammurabiIt is the black stone stele which is carved from a single, four-ton slab of diorite, a durable but very difficult stone for carving.
