Week 2 integrative studio II

Gestalt principle’s examples that I came across in my everyday life.

☆Multistability.

The ability to see two different things depicted through a single thing.

☆Continuity.

The Gestalt Continuity Law explains that our brain experiences a visual line of elements that are grouped together. There is usually a tendency to perceive a line continuing its established direction.

☆Figure and ground.

Figure–ground is a type of perceptual grouping which is a vital necessity for recognizing objects through our vision.

☆closure.

The ability of our brain to complete a shape even when it isnt closed.

☆similarity.

The principle of similarity states that when things which share visual characteristics such as shape, size, color, texture, value or orientation belong together.

☆proximity.

Different elements laid out close to each other they are perceived to be belonging to the same group.

I have chosen the word ‘engulf’ from the movie.

Engulf means to cover or surround somebody/something completely.

In this case the light source is being covered up by the outer case.

Movie reviews.

1) Amelie-

Jean- pierre Jeunet’s “Amelie” is a yummy pastry of movie, a fantasy in which a heroine overcomes a sad childhood and grows up with cheerful memories. Her father who is a doctor gives her no hugs or kisses and only touches her for the checkups. It is a very uplifting motion picture with design perspective. Amelie has a mixture of shyness, energy and mischievous behaviour. She starts by bringing together Georgette (tobacconist) and Joseph (Ill tempered customer). Then she finds a box of old toys and she returns it to the owner, sending him a reverie of childhood. Then she takes in interest into the life of Nino who collects pictures left behind at photo booths in Paris. It is basically a movie on a woman who decides to change the world by changing lives of people she knows with charming and romantic fantasy.

2) Sucker punch-

It is an epic action film which involves imagination of a young girl whose dream provides an ultimate escape from her darker reality. She is not restrained by the boundaries of time and place. She is free to go where her mind takes her. She experiences incredible adventures between reality and imagination. She is been locked away against her will, but Babydoll has not lost her will to survive. She is very strongly determined for her freedom. She gets the support of four girls. The reluctant sweet pea, the outspoken rocket, the smart street Blondie and fiercely loyal Amber. They try to escape the terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue and Gorski, before the High roller comes for Babydoll. The girls engage in fantastical warfare against samurais and serpents. Together they willingly decide to sacrifice in order to stay alive. Finally with the help of Wise man their unbelievable journey is succeeded and they are set free.

3) Run Loca Run-

Foreign language action pictures are all rare but this movie with frentic pace and techno soundtrack, proves that genre isn’t just confined to hollywood.

It is ideal for displaying alternate and parallel lines. It is essentially a film about itself, a closed loop of style. It involves a running story and action sequences have a life and logic of their own. It is done with great energy and cheerfully.

Above described movies are being shown with some linear and running patterns with logic and life and great energy. Everything adds up to the movie. Some design elements and gestalt principles are also being used up in the movie.

It is a great movie to get inspired from and take decisions with cheerful zeal and energy.
